Using a ready-made layout
Templates give you panel positions and a background, not a finished report.
A template is a grid: where the KPIs go, where the charts go, how much room the slicers get. You get two things from it.
- A background image sized to the report canvas, with the panel areas drawn in your brand colors.
- A position table listing the X, Y, width and height of every panel.
In Power BI, set the background image on the page (Format page, Canvas background, fit to page), then place each visual and type its position into the Format pane under General, Properties, Position.
Typing positions in sounds tedious, but it is what makes the panels line up exactly; dragging by eye is what makes a report look slightly off without anyone being able to say why.
